Reading reconciliation exception queues as control evidence
Month-end exception lists are not only an operations headache — they show where treasury applications allow overrides without a durable trail.
Exception queues gather items that failed automatic matching between the treasury application and bank statements. Operations teams clear them under time pressure. Auditors can read the same queue for control signals.
Look for recurring overrides by the same user ID, exceptions closed without an attached reason code, and spikes after entitlement changes. Those patterns often point back to template edits, cut-off misalignment, or bank connectivity timing rather than one-off bank errors.
When we sample a queue, we tie each selected item to the payment path that created it. The finding is stronger when the report shows both the exception and the screen that allowed the underlying condition — not merely a count of open items.
